Tonkolili District, Sierra Leone – 13-10-2024
In a major development for Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector, the Co-founders of Rokona Agro Investment SL Limited, Mr. Maxwell Rahman Koroma (CEO) and Mr. Ibrahim Conteh (COO), made an official visit to the company’s farm site in Rokona Village, Lower Yoni Chiefdom, Tonkolili District. The purpose of the visit was to conduct a survey of the land that the company will occupy for its ambitious agricultural project, which aligns with the national goal of enhancing food security and rural development.
During the visit, the Co-founders outlined the company’s plans to kickstart its first pilot phase, which will cover 12 hectares of farmland dedicated to the cultivation of cassava, maize, vegetables, and watermelon. Additionally, 5 hectares of nearby swamp land have been earmarked for rice farming, bringing the total project area to 17 hectares.
In a statement, Mr. Maxwell Rahman Koroma expressed optimism about the project’s potential, noting, “This is just the beginning of our vision to contribute to His Excellency President Bio’s #FeedSalone initiative. With this initial 17 hectares of farmland, we aim to start a model that will grow sustainably, create jobs, and improve food production in Sierra Leone.”
As part of a long-term plan, Rokona Agro Investment SL has also reached an agreement with the local community in Rokona Village to secure a 50-hectare lease, with plans to expand the project in the future. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the company and the village is set to be signed in the coming weeks. The company has assured the local people that it will work in partnership with them to enhance agricultural productivity while ensuring mutual benefits.
Mr. Ibrahim Conteh emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with the local community, stating, “We are not just here to farm; we are here to collaborate and uplift the people of Rokona Village. This project will not only generate food but also serve as a source of empowerment and development for the entire community.”
The survey marks a key milestone in the company’s journey toward creating a sustainable and impactful agricultural enterprise. Rokona Agro Investment SL Limited is committed to expanding its operations in phases, starting with this 50-hectare lease and growing incrementally as the project matures.
With a diverse range of crops and a focus on community engagement, the project is expected to have a significant impact on the region’s agricultural output and contribute to national efforts toward food security.
